X-ray, CT or MRI After an Accident: What Each One Shows
Illinois Injury Insider Staff ·
An X-ray shows bones. A CT scan shows bones in more detail and is common in emergency rooms. An MRI shows soft tissue such as discs, ligaments and nerves. The treating provider decides which one fits.
X-ray
Fast and widely available. It is used to look at bones and how they line up. It does not show discs, ligaments or nerves well.
CT scan
Many X-ray images combined by a computer into cross-sections. It gives a more detailed view of bone and is often used in emergency settings.
MRI
Uses a magnet, not radiation, to make images of soft tissue. It is the study most often used to look at discs, ligaments, muscles and nerves.
Who decides
The provider treating you orders imaging based on your exam and how your symptoms change. Ask what the study is meant to answer and how you will get the results.
